RADIO SCILLY TO HOLD LOTTERY

Radio Scilly is to be supported by a new Islands-based lottery.

The Community Radio in the Isles of Scilly Society (CRIOS), which has been licensed by the council, will hold a weekly draw to fund the Radio Scilly volunteer training scheme as well as a news and emergency information service.

The new fund will also offer grants to established Islands-based clubs and societies which are in need of assistance.

The computerised draw will be overseen by an independent witness and will be broadcast live on Radio Scilly every Monday at 12 noon. Each week, someone will win at least £1,000 for their £1 membership.

Community Director Zoe Parry says this funding will enable the Radio Scilly team to help many Islanders develop new skills.

“I’ve spent the last fortnight recruiting volunteers who want to be present programmes or gain media and multimedia experience with Radio Scilly. I’ve had an amazing response, particularly from younger islanders," she said.

“This funding will help Radio Scilly offer training to anyone who wants to develop personal or career skills or who simply wants a new creative outlet for their leisure time. Whilst some mainland organisations charge for this training, we’ll be able to offer it to Islanders for free.”

Unlike the National Lottery, tickets will not be on sale. Instead, Islanders and mainland residents can take part in the weekly £1,000 draw through a bank standing order.

For a form or more information on the CRIOS lottery contact Keri or Zoe via Radio Scilly on 01720 423417 or email kerijones@aol.com.

Radio Scilly will commence all-year round broadcasting on 107.9FM on September 3 from studios in Porthmellon.
